Ausgangspunkt der Arbeit ist die grundlegende Thematik der informellen Stadt anhand vom Beispiel Mexico City. Eine Stadt welche zu weit mehr als der Hälfte informellen Ursprungs ist, aber auch eine Stadt welche sich in den letzten Jahren immer deutlicher als Dienstleistungszentrum ganz Lateinamerikas profiliert. Mexico City ist eine Stadt voller kleiner Fragmente, die oft wenig bis gar nichts miteinander zu tun haben. Ein Ort voller Widersprüche und Gegensätze. Faro ist ein Projekt welches sich mit den Schnittstellen dieser beiden konträren Systeme an städtischer Kultur auseinandersetzt. Ein Experiment und eine Hinterfragung zur strategischen Inkorporation urbaner Randgebiete in das städtische Gefüge. In den informellen Siedlungen haben sich eigenen Typologien und Siedlungsstrukturen aus der Praxis der Improvisation entwickelt. Der informelle Sektor gehört dort zum Alltag und hat einen bedeutenden Stellenwert im öffentlichen Leben. Von kleinen Unternehmen bis hin zu Taxifahrer ohne Lizenz, Hersteller und Verkäufer von raubkopierten CDs und Videos lebt ein grossteil der Bewohner von inoffiziellen Tätigkeiten. Diese Zonen werden systhematisch von der Stadtstruktur ausgegrenzt. Faro versucht einen Nichtort in einen von der Stadt wahrgenommenen Raum zu verwandeln, indem öffentliche Infrastruktur (wie kulturelle, soziale, pädagogische, gewerbliche und freizeittechnische Einrichtungen) auf verlorenem Freiraum geschaffen werden.

The starting point of the work is the fundamental issue of the informal city based on the example of Mexico City, a city more than half of informal origin. Yet, it is also a city which in recent years increasingly profiled as a service centre throughout Latin America. Mexico City is a city full of small fragments, which often have little or nothing to do with each other. Faro is a project concerned with the intersection of these two conflicting systems of urban culture. An experiment and a reflection on the strategic incorporation of urban peripheral areas in the urban structure. In the informal settlements their own typologies and municipal structures developed from the practice of improvisation. The informal sector is part of everyday life and has an important role in public life. From small businesses to unlicensed taxi drivers, manufacturers and sellers of pirate CDs and videos, a large part of the inhabitants live from unofficial activities. These zones are systematically marginalised by the city structure. Faro tries to transform a "No place" in one of the city areas, by creating public infrastructure such as cultural, social, educational, commercial and leisure facilities on lost space.
